MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE OF BISHOP JANUÁRIO MACHAZE NHANGUMBE
“If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.” (Romans 14:8)
IMBISA joins the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique in expressing deep sorrow at the passing—his definitive Easter—of the Most Reverend Bishop Januário Machaze Nhangumbe, Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Pemba, who died this Sunday, August 23, at the age of 92.
With his attentive gaze, generous heart, sense of history, and remarkable memory, Bishop Januário shepherded the flock entrusted to him with love and wisdom, dedicating his life to the service of the Church. For nearly two decades, he guided the Diocese of Pemba with a pastoral zeal that left an indelible mark on the spiritual life of his community. His paternal and spiritual care served as a beacon of hope and faith for many.
At this moment of farewell, we lift our prayers to the Lord, joining the family and friends of Bishop Januário and the entire diocesan community of Pemba in asking that he be granted eternal rest.
May the Divine Light, which never fades, shine upon him, as the Holy Church prays: “For your faithful people, Lord, life is changed, not ended; and when the mortal body lies in death, a place in heaven is prepared for them in eternity.”
In the certainty of the resurrection, where we shall be reunited in eternal glory, we call upon the Lord to welcome this faithful servant into His Kingdom of light and peace. May his life continue to inspire us all to be shepherds after the heart of Christ.
