Following the death of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso on 6th June, 2026, and leaving the Diocese of Quelimane vacant, of which he was the titular Bishop, the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, appointed, on 12th June, 2026, His Excellency Most Reverend Bishop Estevão Ângelo Fernando, Bishop of the Diocese of Alto Molocue, as Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Quelimane.
In accordance with Canon Law (canon 427), Bishop Estevão Ângelo Fernando will simultaneously govern the two local Churches with the same rights and duties as a diocesan bishop, until the Holy See appoints the new titular Bishop.
IMBISA wishes Dom Estevão a fruitful apostolate, while inviting all the faithful, priests, religious and lay people to pray for the mission of their new Apostolic Administrator and for the eternal rest of Dom Osório Citora Afonso.
