DEATH OF BISHOP OSÓRIO CITORA AFONSO I.M.C

It is with profound sadness that IMBISA received the news of the passing of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso, Bishop of Quelimane and Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira, on 6 June 2026. His death occurred under circumstances that are still being investigated by the competent authorities. At present, it is understood that the Bishop was found deceased in his official residence, and the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

We acknowledge the shock, grief, and many questions that this unexpected loss has generated within the Church in Mozambique, the dioceses he faithfully served, and the wider family of God throughout the IMBISA region.

In this moment of sorrow, we remain anchored in the hope of the Resurrection. As the Lord Jesus reminds us: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live” (John 11:25).

IMBISA joins the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique, the clergy, the religious, and the lay faithful in praying for the eternal repose of Bishop Osório’s soul. We give thanks to God for his dedicated ministry, his pastoral leadership, and his faithful service to the people of God. We also pray that the truth regarding this tragic event may be brought to light with clarity and justice.

We invite all the faithful throughout the IMBISA region to unite in prayer and solidarity with the church in Mozambique, Bishop Osório’s family, friends, and all who mourn his passing. May the Lord grant them strength, peace, and consolation during this difficult time.

May the Lord grant Bishop Osório Citora Afonso eternal rest, and may he be welcomed into the heavenly Kingdom to share in the joy of the saints and the glory of the resurrection.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.
