Listen to Him

Second Sunday of Lent Year A

Genesis 12:1–4a; 2 Timothy 1:8–10; Matthew 17:1–9.

The Second Sunday of Lent is about Jesus showing His disciples a glimpse of His glory on the mountain. He shines with light, and the Father’s voice says: “This is my beloved Son… listen to Him.” That moment was meant to give the disciples courage when they later saw Him suffer on the Cross.

For us, Lent is also a journey. It is not only about giving up things, but about learning to trust God more. Abraham left his home because God asked him to, even though he did not know what was ahead. We too are asked to listen to God and let go of habits or distractions that keep us from growing closer to God.

Paul reminds Timothy that following Jesus takes courage. In our daily lives, that courage might look like being honest when it’s hard, forgiving someone who hurt us, or choosing to do what is right even when friends push us in another direction.

The Father’s words, “Listen to Him”—are very practical. Listening to Jesus means taking time each day to pray, reading the Bible, and paying attention to how He speaks through creation and   people around us. It means letting His voice guide our choices at school, at work, and at home. Listening to Jesus is not just something we do in church; it is a way of living that touches every part of life.

When we listen to Him in our families, we learn patience, forgiveness, and love. His voice teaches us to build peace at home, even when there are disagreements.

When we listen to Him in our work or studies, we learn honesty, discipline, and responsibility. His words remind us that success is not only about achievement, but about integrity and service.

When we listen to Him in our friendships, we learn respect and kindness. His teaching helps us resist peer pressure, avoid gossip, and choose friends who lift us up rather than pull us down.

When we listen to Him in our struggles, we find courage. His voice tells us not to give up, even when life feels heavy. He reminds us that suffering is not the end, but part of the journey toward glory.

When we listen to Him in our use of technology and social media, we learn balance. His wisdom helps us avoid wasting time, comparing ourselves to others, or being trapped by distractions. Instead, we use these tools to share goodness and truth.

The Transfiguration shows us that listening to Jesus changes us. It gives us light in the middle of darkness, hope in the middle of trials, and strength to keep walking toward the Cross and Resurrection. Lent is the season to practice listening more deeply—through prayer, Scripture, and acts of love—so that His voice becomes the guide for every decision we make. Listening to Jesus is not just important; it is essential. It is the difference between living in confusion and living with purpose, between being lost and being led. If we truly listen to Him, our lives will be transfigured, and His light will shine through us in the world. The Transfiguration shows us that beyond the struggles of Lent, there is hope and glory. When we pray, fast, and give to others, we are slowly being changed. Christ’s light begins to shine through us in simple ways—through kindness, patience, and love.

So, this week, let us make space to listen to Jesus. In quiet prayer, in Scripture, and in the small acts of love we show each day, His voice will strengthen us. The mountain of glory is meant to give us courage for the valleys of life, and the promise of resurrection is what keeps us moving forward.
