On 10 March 2025, Cyclone Jude hit Nampula Province in Mozambique, leaving widespread destruction and displacing thousands of families. In response to the crisis, Caritas Mozambique, in partnership with government agencies and humanitarian organizations, has been working tirelessly to provide assistance to those most affected.

The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management (INGD) has opened nine accommodation centers, currently hosting nearly 2,000 displaced individuals. However, the damage is extensive. Over 302,000 people have been impacted, with 65,164 families losing their homes. Essential infrastructure has been severely damaged, including homes, schools, health units, and transportation networks. A total of 247 schools have been affected, leaving over 90,000 students and 1,180 teachers without education.

Agriculture, a key source of livelihood, has also suffered. More than 101,000 hectares of land have been impacted, with many crops destroyed. Coastal communities have seen their fishing boats and gear damaged, worsening the economic hardship faced by affected residents.

Despite these challenges, Caritas Mozambique and its partners are actively supporting the recovery efforts. Caritas Nacala, for instance, continues to assist Cyclone Chido victims in Memba by distributing tents with the help of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). However, resources remain stretched, and more support is urgently needed.

Father Evaristo Moreriua, Diocesan Secretary of Caritas Nampula, highlighted the worsening situation, with many families now homeless and the looming threat of famine as crops have been destroyed. Caritas Mozambique is calling on partners to support the affected communities, especially those who have been impacted by both Cyclones Chido and Jude.
