In its continued effort to combat the global issue of human trafficking, the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishops’ Conference (ZCBC) took a significant step forward by holding an awareness campaign at St. Peter’s High School in Mbare, Harare, on 8 February 2025. Focused on raising awareness and promoting prayer against human trafficking, it brought together students, educators, and community members to stand in solidarity against this grave injustice. The initiative was shared with the wider community through the ZCBC Soccom Updates Facebook page, helping to spread the important message of vigilance and prevention.
Sr. Theresa Nyadombo, a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors and the ZCBC National Coordinator for Safeguarding, was the keynote speaker for the event. With a passion for safeguarding the dignity of every human being, Sr. Theresa delivered a powerful talk on the dangers of human trafficking, offering practical advice to students on how to protect themselves.
“The perpetrators of trafficking lure people with promises of jobs, education, or a better life, but the reality is often devastating,” Sr. Theresa warned the gathered students. Her words served as a stark reminder of the deceptive tactics traffickers use to exploit vulnerable individuals. She emphasized the importance of being vigilant and discerning, especially when presented with suspicious offers from strangers or even acquaintances.
The presentation highlighted the alarming physical and psychological toll that human trafficking has on its victims. Sr. Theresa urged the students to trust their instincts and seek help if they ever feel unsafe, reinforcing the message that no one should ever be subjected to exploitation or abuse.
The event held in Mbare was particularly significant, as the area faces significant challenges related to drug peddling and sexual exploitation, both of which are linked to human trafficking. This initiative by the ZCBC aims to address these issues head-on, empowering youth and communities to protect themselves from exploitation.
Fr. Mgcini Moyo, a prominent figure at the event, echoed the sentiments of Sr. Theresa, stressing the importance of standing united in the fight against human trafficking. His message was clear: “No human being is for sale.” This powerful statement underscores the Church’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding human dignity and ensuring that every individual, regardless of age or background, is treated with respect and honor.
The ZCBC’s ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking are a testament to the Church’s dedication to promoting a world free from exploitation. By educating young people, raising awareness, and providing practical tools for protection, the ZCBC continues its mission to protect the most vulnerable members of society.
As the Church stands steadfast in its mission, it calls on all members of society to join in the fight against human trafficking. Together, we can create a world where no one is subjected to the horrors of exploitation and where human dignity is upheld for all.
